Cleats – Getting your cleats set up correctly could help you avoid injury and even make you go faster – we tell you how it works

There are two basic things to sort out when it comes to setting up cleats on your cycling shoes – the angle of the cleat on the sole of your shoe and the fore-aft position of the cleat.

Finding the correct angle is your first job whether you’re just starting out with your first pair of clipless pedals or you’re an experienced rider setting up a new pair of shoes and pedals.

Also allow you to click into your clipless pedals, connecting you to your bike. Some pedals offer a fixed position on your pedals, while other offers a range of play of a certain degree, helping you to stay comfortable.

There are a few different types that fit into specific pedals. Shimano SPD has 2 bolt cleats that are usually reserved for mountain biking, while SPD-SL uses a 3 bolt system that’s mostly found on road bikes. Crank Brothers use their own system, and have cleats to match, and Speedplay also have their own special system.
